Danville Regional Foundation Funds Community Center The Danville Regional Foundation awards a grant of $3 million to Chatham Cares, Inc. to build a Community Center in Chatham.
Dr. Bob Ashby, Chairman of the Foundation, made the announcement at a meeting of Pittsylvania County leaders at Chatham Baptist Church. He said the Foundation’s Board of Directors had reviewed requests made at a series of community forums last year and a number of speakers said a community center is a real need in the County.
“This grant request reflects our view that the people of the Dan River Region are not satisfied with the status quo,” Ashby said. “The Foundation wants to be recognized as an agent for positive change for today and tomorrow.”
The Community Center will be a public gathering place for all persons, Ashby said. “By bringing community residents together in a variety of community-related experiences, the Community Center will offer programs that provide a positive and sustained impact on the health, education and well-being of the citizens of Pittsylvania County,” he said. “The Community Center will engage the community, assist in educational attainment, provide opportunities for health and wellness programming and replace an abandoned, blighted building with a first quality, fully-functioning community center,” Ashby added.
The Community Center will be constructed on a site on Main Street currently owned by Chatham Cares, Inc., a non-profit organization chartered in 2005 to serve the health, education and well-being of the citizens of Pittsylvania County. The Chatham Unit of the Boys & Girls Club, presently at home in Chatham Baptist Church, will relocate its activities to the Community Center upon its completion.
