When George Payne, Product Availability Manager with the local Pepsi Beverages Company, suggested that the company raise funds for the local Boys & Girls Clubs, he had no idea he would be leading a charge that would ultimately be more successful that anyone anticipated. Darin Ryding, Pepsi-Danville’s Unit Manager, encourages community involvement within the plant, and asked George to plan and lead the fundraiser, assisted by Jason Hall, Territory Sales Manager.
The employees at the plant participated in a Horseshoe Tournament as one leg of the project; the delivery drivers also worked their routes to raise money. Money raised by the employees would be doubled, because the leadership at the corporate level of Pepsi encourages community support by matching donations raised dollar for dollar up to $10,000. This was a great incentive for the Pepsi employees to raise as much as possible, but the incentive grew even more when Mr. Pat Daly, of Daly Seven, Inc. offered to match the funds raised by the local plant by way of Courtyard by Marriott.
Excitement built as donors realized that their money would be tripled by donating to the Pepsi fund drive. Donations came in from the community, the Pepsi employees and from friends of the Boys & Girls Clubs. The net result was a check presentation from Pepsi to some of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area for over $29,000!
“When we began this project, we had no idea how big it would be. We are so pleased to help the kids of the local community,” said Ryding.
Don Nodtvedt, Executive Director of the BGCDA said “This is a great day! We are so happy to receive the donation because it will help us continue our mission to transform this community, one young life at a time! Equally important is the fact that the community realizes the value of the services we offer to kids and families in the area. This has been a true Community fundraiser, and I don’t think there are enough words to thank the folks at our local Pepsi Plant for spearheading this project.”
